Two charged after South Shields care home death

Two carers have been charged following an investigation into the death of an elderly woman at a South Tyneside residential home.

Joyce Wordingham, 80, was found dead at St Michael's View care home in South Shields in February last year.

Daphne Joseph, 46, of Graham Street, South Shields, has been charged with ill treatment and neglect.

Sean Abbott, 21, of Gainsborough Avenue, South Shields, is charged with seven counts of assault.

Mrs Wordingham's death prompted a Northumbria Police inquiry into 15 other deaths at the home, which is owned and operated by Southern Cross Healthcare.

A spokesman for the force said the two members of staff were due to appear before magistrates in South Shields later this month.

He said charges against Mr Abbott related to four other residents who died at the home.

Southern Cross Healthcare has said it is co-operating with the ongoing police investigation.

Fifty people are cared for at St Michael's View, some of them with special nursing needs.
