Personal Social Services Expenditure and Costs

Commenting on Health and Social Care Information Centre figures in today’s ‘Personal Social Services Expenditure and Costs’ report, Chief Executive of Independent Age, Janet Morrison, said:

“These figures are further evidence of the unravelling of social care services in England. Not only are councils spending less on social care, they are spending less on older people’s care in particular, at a time when demand is increasing because of our ageing population. Some of the worst hit areas provide some of the most basic services that older people need such as day care and hot meals. Councils are also spending less on aids and adaptations such as grab rails in older people’s homes and tragically this is likely to mean more older people at risk of falls and increases in emergency hospital admissions. Overall, every day councils are becoming less and less able to meet the expectations of them under the new Care Act.”
